The history dates back to September 1, 1960, when the intention was to establish a "Department of Industrial Economics". It was to have a university-wide scope and be the rector's department providing teaching of economic subjects at the Faculty of Mechanical, Mining and Metallurgy Engineering, of the Technical University in Kosice. As the plan was not implemented to the original extent, the department was established at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Since 1963, it has been called the "Department of Organization and Management of Industrial Production". Its first leader was doc. Ing. Stefan Gronsky. In the years 1961/62 to 1970 the head of the department was doc. Dr. Ing. Eduard Kračmár. Since 1962, the department has also provided teaching in the specialization "Organization and Management of Mechanical Engineering Production", which was part of the Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology.

In the years 1971-72 he was the head of the "Department of Organization and Management of Industrial Production" prof. Ing. Stefan Samson, CSc. In 1973, doc. Dr. Ing. Andrej Rybar, CSc. On January 1, 1974, the department merged with the "Department of Safety and Work Organization" of the Faculty of Mining and was renamed the "Department of Economics and Industrial Management", while remaining in the structure of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at VŠT. In the years 1974 to 1983 its leader was prof. Ing. Anton Sopko. In 1975, a new study department "Economics and Management of Mechanical Engineering" was opened.

As teaching requirements changed, so did the internal organizational structure. In the years 1974-1990, individual sections of the "Department of Economics and Industrial Management" provided teaching of economic subjects at the faculties: mining, metallurgy, construction, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering, and teaching system engineering at the FME.

In the years 1983-1990 the head of the "Department of Economics and Industrial Management" was doc. Ing. Stefan Vruzek, CSc. In the years 1990-2006, the head of the department was prof. Ing. Igor Liberko, CSc. As a result of a change in the organizational structure of the faculty, the transition to a system of institutes, the department was renamed the "Department of Management and Economics" on September 1, 1998 and became part of the "Institute of Technology and Management" of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. From June 1, 2003 to April 31, 2011, the Department had a Department of Industrial Engineering and a Management Department in connection with the secured structure of study programs and the systematization of jobs. In the years 2006-2009 the head of the "Department of Management and Economics" was prof. Ing. Dusan Sebo, PhD. Since 2009-2016 he is the head of the "Department of Management and Economics" prof. Ing. Jozef Kováč, CSc., Which under his leadership in 2011 renamed the "Department of Industrial Engineering and Management".

A significant change in the activities of the then department occurred in 2005 in connection with the granting of accreditation in the field of 5.2.52 Industrial Engineering in the study programs Industrial Engineering and Design, Organization and Management of Production at All Levels of Higher Education and Granting Rights for Habilitation and Professorships .

The professional composition of this department was strengthened in 2008 in connection with the appointment of two professors of Industrial Engineering. Prof. Šebo, who at the time of his work at the department focused research on optimizing the logistics networks of companies. Prof. Mihok, who still specializes in corporate crisis management.

At the end of 2016, under the influence of organizational changes, the "Department of Industrial Engineering and Management" is transformed within the organizational structure into the "Institute of Management, Industrial and Digital Engineering" under the leadership of prof. Ing. Jozef Kováč, CSc., After his departure on 31 May 2020, prof. Ing. Peter Trebuňa, Ph.D. and from 1.12.2020 he holds the position of director of the institute.

In 2020, there was a change in connection with the granting of accreditation from Department 5.2.52 Industrial Engineering to the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the study programs Industrial Engineering and Business Management and Economics at all levels of higher education and the granting of rights for the habilitation procedure and the procedure for appointing professors.

In 2021 there was another change in the organizational structure of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the Intitute of Management, Industrial and Digital Engineering became the Department of Industrial and Digital Engineering, which he continues to head as the head of the department prof.
