History of department

HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT:

The Department of Power Engineering has existed since September 1, 1992. It was established as a part of the change in the organizational structure of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Technical University of Košice.

Nowadays, Department provides education in the accredited study program Power Machines and Equipment in the second and in the third university degree in full-time and external form of study.

The establishment of the energy-oriented department at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Technology in Košice (today know as Technical University of Košice – TUKE) dates to 1952. At that time, four departments were established at Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of TUKE. One of them was the Department of General Engineering. Its leader was prof. Ing. František Kámen, the first rector of TUKE. He came to Košice from the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava with three colleagues. When the specialization Design and Operation of Thermal Energy Equipment was established in the school year 1954/55, the Department of General Engineering was divided into the Department of Steam Centers for Thermal Management, under the leadership of prof. Ing. František Kámen, and at the Department of Water and Heat Engines, under the leadership of prof. Ing. Ferdinand Šujanský. In July 1970 doc. Ing. Fedor Čupka took over the leadership of the department after the professor Šujanský retired. He headed the department until 1986. In the following years of its existence, the department changed its name and management. Stable name of the department: Department of Power Engineering has been preserved since 1992.
